A week or so ago we all got up early on a beautiful Saturday morning and headed out for some picking. Now when we go on our excursions we always pack goodies to enjoy through out the day. One of the family favorites is the Capri Sun Big Kid Pouches. My son loves the Maui Cooler. We also pack lots of water, a phone charger to make sure we can take pictures and research items on the go, gloves and some snacks to munch on. On this particular morning as we were on our way to one of our favorite Flea Markets we saw a sign for an Estate Sale. So of course we decided to check out out. Both my teen son and I found treasures we had to have.
Of the 3 items we bought at the Estate Sale, my teen son Gabe is the one who found a hidden treasure. The item he chose was the green decanter. He wasn’t sure what year it was from or what it was used for but he was drawn to it. He haggled with the guy who was in charge of the sale and got it for $2. I thought it was a bargain.
It wasn’t until we were in the car that he took off the top and realized there was a U.S. Navy E Award inside the decanter (pictured below).
What makes this such a neat find is that these service awards were given to workers in manufacturing companies that help in the war efforts. The particular one was given to the employees at Westinghouse on 9/23/1941. So this award is 72 years old!! Sooo cool.
Discovering the story behind treasures you find while picking is probably my favorite thing to do I love researching and finding the history behind items I find while picking. My love of history and American treasures has now spanned 2 decades. I first fell in love with picking when I was in high school. My parents would watch an antique show on Sunday and I loved hearing all about the history of the items shown. As a family we would go to Estate Sales and the Flea Market every weekend. Now with a family of my own, my sons and daughters have joined in on the fun. We love watching American Pickers and we love hunting for estate sales and new flea markets.
