Gosh it is hard to believe that Smokey Bear is 72 years old. He has helped teach people the importance of fire safety and made people think about their responsibility to be safe for decades. Sadly each year many forest fires are still started because of carelessness. In honor of Smokey’s birthday the Ad Council, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters (NASF), have teamed together to launched the new “Rise from the Ashes” campaign.
Smokey Bear Wants YOU to Rise From the Ashes
Did you know? A wildfire can start due to the following:
- Improperly extinguished fire pit
- Dumping ashes from a BBQ/grill
- Metal chains hanging from a moving vehicle
- Parking over tall, dry grass
- Dying embers left in a campfire
Smokey Bear’s message about wildfire prevention is the center of the longest running and one of the most successful PSA campaigns in our nation’s history. Although progress has been made, accidental, human-caused wildfires remain one of the most critical environmental issues affecting the U.S. Smokey’s message is as relevant today as it was in 1944 and he continues to have an incredible impact on our country.
One of the facts that is most important especially here in Florida is dragging chains sparking a fire. I see boats and other watercraft being towed all the time with chains not properly secured. Don’t be afraid to mention it to the driver if you see them at a gas station or at a stop light.
