My Perfect Iced Coffee

I have been a long time lover of Iced Coffee and visit my local Dunkin Donuts religiously. I am also a huge fan of Ree Drummond and her blog The Pioneer Woman. Well my two favorites collided about a month or so ago when Ree posted a recipe for The Perfect Iced Coffee. I have been meaning to try the recipe since it was posted but with so much going on I haven’t been able too until now.
So after following the recipe, with a few modifications, I have to say it is delicious. I also now know I must buy a micro strainer. LOL I had to use a regular strainer and lots of cheese cloth. But in the end the coffee was just like mom used to buy.
After trying my first glass I started thinking about the money I spend on coffee. A large iced coffee cost about $2.79 (as of March 2020) and I usually go everyday. So $2.50 times 7 is $19.53 a week or $1015.56 a year. Wow, it really adds up, doesn’t it?!
This recipe calls for a pound of coffee which can vary in price depending on what brand you choose. But, the iced coffee can keep for up to a month in the refrigerator. So you end up saving quite a bit in the end. Note: I notice since this post was first written, coffee packages have changed. Many are now 10 oz instead of 16 oz. If you can’t find 16 oz, adjust the amount of water a bit.
Try some vanilla coffee syrup, sweetened condensed milk like Ree’s recipe, or some half and half to your perfect iced coffee. My wallet and I can’t thank Ree enough for posting this recipe!! If you love iced coffee like I do you have to give this recipe a shot!
Alternate Brewing Method
If you’re crazy for cold brew, then you may want to get your own ice coffee maker. There are a several nice models in different sizes and styles. What nice is that you won’t need to strain with the cheese cloth or micro strainer.

Tips to Make Delicious Iced Coffee
1. Quality Coffee
The better the coffee, the better tasting the coffee will be. Try out different blends and strengths until you find your favorite. Some suggest a deep roast, like you’d use for espresso. I’ve also seen some using a course ground coffee instead of the usual fine ground. Again, it’s about experimenting to find your favorite brew.
2. Use Coffee Ice Cubes
Freeze left over coffee in an ice cube tray to use in your iced coffee. It won’t water down the coffee as they melt. You can even add extra flavors to them like chocolate syrup or cinnamon. The video below has a great recipe idea using coffee cubes so be sure to check that out!
3. Be Your Own Barista with Flavor
Speaking of adding flavors. Do it like a barista. Get different flavored syrups like the vanilla we mentioned earlier. There are lots of great flavors to pick from.
Or make your own with these recipe ideas:
Start with a simple syrup made from 3 cups water and 3 cups sugar. Bring to a boil. Remove from the stove and let is cool for 30 minutes. Divide it into 3 containers. In the first one add 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. For the 2nd one, mix in 2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder. And in the 3rd one, mix in 1/4 cup dulce de leche.
